Passive Speakers

56 Products

When the rig has to perform night after night, passive speakers remain the workhorse of professional audio. By separating the amplification from the cabinet, passive PA speakers give you control over your signal chain, simplify swaps in the field, and keep per-box weight down, exactly what production crews, rental houses, and integrators need when they're speccing systems at scale.

Square Cable stocks passive loudspeakers from the brands you already trust: Electro-Voice, JBL, RCF, Yamaha, Turbosound, FBT, VOID Acoustics, and more, at wholesale pricing built for dealer, rental, and integration accounts.

Why Pros Spec Unpowered Speakers

Unpowered speakers put you in the driver's seat. Instead of being locked into onboard amplification, you match cabinets to outboard amps and processing that fit the room, the route, or the budget. That flexibility pays off across every job:

  • Lower weight per box: No internal amp means faster load-ins and less strain on flown arrays and pole-mounted tops.
  • Centralized amp racks: Keep power and DSP in one rack for cleaner troubleshooting and tuning across a venue.
  • Field-serviceable: A failed cabinet doesn't take an amplifier down with it, so swaps are quick, and inventory stays simple.
  • Scalable system design: Add cabinets without rethinking your entire power scheme, ideal for distributed and multi-zone installs.

For rental fleets especially, passive PA speakers are easier to standardize, stack, and sub-rent, and easier to repair when they come back off a run.

Matching PA Speakers to the Application

The right cabinet depends on the gig. Stocking a range of PA speakers lets you cover everything from a corporate breakout room to a main-stage line array:

  • Bars & restaurants: Compact surface-mount and ceiling boxes for even, low-profile coverage that disappears into the décor.
  • Schools & houses of worship: 70V/100V install-friendly passive speakers for long cable runs and distributed zones.
  • Production & touring: High-SPL 12" and 15" tops plus floor monitors that hold up under nightly abuse.
  • Outdoor & permanent install: IP-rated cabinets engineered to take weather without quitting.

Pair any of these with the correct amplifier, and you've got a system tuned to the space rather than a compromise out of the box.

FAQs

Can I run these straight off a powered mixer, or do I need a separate amp?

Either works. Unpowered speakers need external amplification, so you can drive them from a powered mixer for smaller setups or a dedicated amp rack for bigger rigs. Just match the amp's output to the cabinet's power handling and impedance.

Do these work on a 70V/100V line, or only low-impedance?

Depends on the model. Many of our install-focused passive loudspeakers ship with 70V/100V transformer taps for distributed systems, while stage and touring boxes typically run 8-ohm low-Z. Check the spec sheet or ask us before you order for a job.

How do I know what amplifier to pair with them?

Aim for an amp that delivers headroom above the speaker's continuous rating at the matching impedance. When in doubt, send us your cabinet count and layout—we'll help you size the amp so nothing's underpowered or pushed into clipping.
